Entrepreneurship Clinic Assistant Director

 

The Institute for Justice, the national law firm for liberty, is seeking an Assistant Director at its Clinic on Entrepreneurship at The University of Chicago Law School’s Kane Center for Clinical Legal Education. The nationally-acclaimed IJ Clinic cultivates economic liberty in inner-city Chicago by providing free legal assistance and educational resources to lower-income entrepreneurs who struggle with excessive regulation, educating law students about counseling entrepreneurs, and advocating for reform of the local laws that hinder entrepreneurship. The Assistant Director will work closely with law students to advise clients on business planning, transactions, regulatory compliance, and intellectual property protection. The Assistant Director will co-teach a seminar on Entrepreneurship & The Law and will participate in the peerless intellectual community at the Law School. The Assistant Director will also be a key player in the IJ Clinic’s strategic planning, outreach, research, and activism to support lower-income entrepreneurs as they build businesses and neighborhoods.

Selection of the Assistant Director is contingent upon the approval of the University of Chicago Law School and the Office of the Provost. The Assistant Director must be a licensed attorney with 3+ years of experience in a general business or transactional law practice, who has demonstrated acumen in contract drafting, negotiation, and counseling clients on business planning. A strong academic background, along with a passion for teaching, entrepreneurship and the law, is required. A commitment to public interest work and a facility for working with culturally and economically diverse groups are also necessary. Admission to the Illinois bar and a background in legislative drafting, lobbying, community organizing, land use law, tax, accounting, or start-up financing are pluses.

The position is responsible for managing all aspects of the Institute’s mass communications program with donors and potential donors including housefile, prospecting, database, vendors, and online marketing and fundraising. Activism Manager

 

The Institute for Justice, the national law firm for liberty, seeks an energetic, passionate and outgoing person to fill the role of an Activism Manager on our newly-expanded activism team at our headquarters in Arlington, Va. The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to IJ’s mission and the principles of free markets, limited government, and individual rights as well as the confidence and optimism to speak publicly and engage unfamiliar audiences in the ideas of liberty. Experience in the libertarian community is essential and a background cultivating grassroots relationships is a plus.

The Activism Manager works to identify and prioritize opportunities for activism, cultivates relationships with activists, and develops and implements grassroots strategies for groups. This person will travel to organize communities and assist them with their strategies every step of the way.

Specific responsibilities are as follows:

-Identify, rank and track opportunities for activism within IJ’s four focus areas of economic liberty, free speech, private property rights and educational choice.

-Travel to organize communities and provide grassroots consultation and materials in person.

-Implement strategies and assist Director of Activism and Coalitions with high-priority projects.

-Develop materials, create content and build on-line presence for groups.

-Facilitate coalition-building and growth of groups.

-Lead other outreach events (protests, rallies) at strategic moments in local grassroots effort.

-Serve as point person in absence of director and serve as primary backup.

Legal/Office Assistant –TX Chapter

 

The Institute for Justice, the national law firm for liberty, seeks an energetic, detail-oriented, and professional individual to fill the role of Legal/Office Assistant for its Texas Chapter located in Austin. The ideal candidate will have a good sense of humor and the ability to juggle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Prior experience in a legal environment is preferred. This important staff member will have the following responsibilities:

Legal:
-Proofread and cite-check legal documents.
-Prepare tables of contents and authorities for legal briefs.
-Prepare affidavits for clients and expert witnesses.
-Maintain case files.
-Read and interpret court rules and determine compliance for filings.
-Register attorneys for education courses; track and update bar memberships.
-Track legislative updates throughout the session.

Office:
-Help attorneys and other staff with special projects.
-Manage law clerk schedules and plan activities.
-Schedule and coordinate meetings.
-Plan and manage attorney travel.
-Answer all incoming telephone calls.
-Greet visitors, guests, and couriers.
-Receive and distribute incoming mail.
-Maintain general office supplies.
-Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree.
-1-4 years legal/office experience.
-Experience performing legal research on Lexis and/or Westlaw.
-High proficiency in word processing.

Constitutional Law Fellowships

Fellowships are unpaid positions open to recent law school graduates interested in gaining hands-on litigation experience by working closely with IJ attorneys on cutting-edge constitutional cases. Successful candidates demonstrate a strong background in constitutional law, an interest in IJ’s mission and a commitment to the principles of free markets, limited government, and individual rights.

Institute for Justice Maffucci Fellowships

 

The Institute for Justice is seeking interns for its Maffucci Fellowship program.  Fellows work closely with IJ’s activism and coalitions team, and assist with exciting research projects, help track controversies and legislation across the country, and provide valuable administrative support to staff on a variety of tasks.  Fellows gain inimitable experience on the front lines of the fight for liberty.

The Maffucci Fellowships are full-time and the duration is flexible, with a minimum commitment of three months.  Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $1,500 that increases to $2,000 with a longer-term commitment of six months or more.  Undergraduates are encouraged to attempt to obtain academic credit for their work.  Recent graduates are also welcome to apply.  Law students should apply to our clerkship program (see below).

Candidates should possess exceptional writing skills, be attentive to detail, and have a strong commitment to individual freedom as well as a demonstrable familiarity with property rights, free speech issues, school choice, and economic liberty.

Applicants are required to submit a cover letter, resume, two letters of recommendation and writing sample.  The writing sample must cover one of IJ’s four pillars in a compelling, blog-style article between 400-600 words.  Use Human Action Network blog posts as a guide. Strategic Research Internship 

 

The Institute for Justice seeks an unpaid research intern for its strategic research program at the Arlington, Va. headquarters. The internship will include data collection and analysis for research projects. The ideal candidate will have facility in mining online databases and data sources, the ability to create and manipulate spreadsheets, and persistence and good judgment in soliciting information and data from state and non-profit agencies.
